Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

A super performer and excellent quality. I just wish the Chrysler would stop upgrading. This is my 2nd Cruiser and I want a convertible.

Had the car for a month and it is really a head turner to say the least. Top is very easy to use and stores out of the way for rear visibility. Have the touring edition Turbo which runs on regular gas. Fund to drive and a classy ride. Other than the dark grey interior which is really too dark for my tastes, but Im working on that, it is a great ride., Gaslonie Mileage is improving as it breaks in.

  • Best car Ive ever owned - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought this car because I loved the looks, but Ive grown to love it for many other reasons. Ive had it almost 3 years without even one minor defect or repair, which is important because I keep cars for at least 10 years. Cant say that about the Benz & Accrura Ive owned. The interior design and utility is top notch. Very roomy back seat and rear cargo compartment. Excellent handling and parking around the city. Ample power. Overall I can honestly say its the best car Ive ever owned.

  • Better than I imagined! - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This car has been fantastic! We needed a vehicle to haul our new baby around and this was the perfect grocery getter with a punch! The turbo is a perfect addition and really completes the package. The 17 in wheels are great and the handling is taught yet forgiving. Granted its not the car you want for autocrossing but for spirited day-to-day driving (w/o baby). This is a great car. Cant wait for the first long road trip!

  • BEST CAR IVE OWNED - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought my PT pre-owned and loved it from the first second I drove it. The only problem I had with it was it dumped water in the back seats because of a/c but was covered by dealer. It holds up well in wrecks my daughter flipped it over going 60!!! That was the end for my favorite car but I had it 7 years and was planning on buying a new car anyways. It was a 5 speed manual, sun roof and loaded. It was great to drive everyday and I miss it.

This car is fun to own. Performance is very good although it needs a 5th gear in the auto box. There is almost no road or engine noise at any speed. Reliability so far has been perfect (7500 miles). It rides and handles well and is comfortable inside. Mileage is good for performance - 22 around town and 27 on the Interstate.

  • Loved this car, but hated turning radius - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I was just in a wreck and totaled my car after 5 years and 55,000 miles. I can speak from experience - this car did wonderfully in a front end collision at 50 mph. I walked away unhurt. Now to the car itself: This car was reliable, never in the shop for any major repairs. I loved the leather seats and seat warmers. The top is so easy to put up and down - I commonly did it while waiting at a stoplight. It had decent trunk space and could easily accommodate 4 passengers. My major complaints with this car were the poor gas mileage (mid/high teens in the city) and the worst turning radius of any car I have ever driven. The car also had some pretty significant blind spots when the top was up.
